Momofuku Seiōbo is Australia’s ‘Restaurant of the Year’

Chef David Chang’s Momofuku Seiōbo in Sydney, has been named as Australia’s Restaurant of the Year by Gourmet Traveller magazine, as part of its 2017 Restaurant Guide Awards.

The 35–cover restaurant in Pyrmont, Chang's first outside New York, has been open five years, but has drawn praise for its distinctly Caribbean edge since Bajan executive chef Paul Carmichael took over from Ben Greeno last year. Momofuku Seiōbo offers an AUD$185 tasting menu, served by the chefs themselves.

“We're used to the idea that we should expect the unexpected at Momofuku, but even so, I don't think any of us guessed this time last year that it would be the flavours of the Caribbean itself [that] would be a thrill ... a revelation,” is Gourmet Traveller’s assessment.

Other winners in the 2017 Gourmet Traveller Restaurant Guide Awards included Sydney’s Restaurant Hubert (New Restaurant of the Year) and Ben Shewry of Melbourne’s Attica (33 in The World’s 50 Best Restaurants 2016), who picked up Peer-Voted Chef of the Year. See the full list here.

Australia is now a premium foodie destination: both René Redzepi and Heston Blumenthal have hosted pop-ups there in recent times, while Melbourne will be the host city for The World’s 50 Best Restaurants 2017 awards.
