In a move that will shock many food lovers and affect many ordinary Thais, Bangkok, widely regarded as having some of the best street food in the world, is to ban street food vendors on major roads in the city.
The move is part of an ongoing campaign to to clean up the city. According to The Guardian, the local government aims to remove all street vendors from Bangkok's 50 districts by the end of 2017. The ban is being enforced for "order and hygiene" reasons the authorities say.
Over 20,000 street vendors, in places like Chinatown and the Khaosan Road, will be affected.

CNN recently declared Bangkok as having the best street food on the planet for a second year in a row and the latest news follows the announcement of an inaugural Michelin Guide to the city. We wondered at the time whether Michelin would follow a similar tact as they had done in Singapore, and highlight some of the city's best street food?
There seems to be some confusion however, as to how exactly the ban will be implemented, with officials claiming push-cart vendors and larger stalls that don't obstruct the sidewalk can continue trading, as well as those renting space on private property.
