How To Grill Beef Tenderloin Like A Pro

Nothing is quite as luxurious as serving beef tenderloin when entertaining. Grilling this tender cut of meat yields amazing results and spares you from spending time in a hot kitchen - something you'll definitely want to avoid in the summer.

If you could use a refresher on how to grill beef tenderloin successfully, we've got you covered.

How To Grill Beef Tenderloin: Essential Tips

Take the beef tenderloin out of the refrigerator and allow it to sit at room temperature for at least 30 minutes. This will take the chill off the meat and allow better browning.

If the beef tenderloin has silver skin (a thick white layer of connective tissue) remove it carefully with the tip of a sharp knife. Here's a helpful video showing you how it's done:

Preheat the grill to medium-high. You'll need two zones: a zone of direct heat for searing the beef tenderloin and indirect heat so the tenderloin can cook to perfection.

Rub the beef tenderloin with oil and season it liberally with salt, pepper and other seasonings of your choice.

Sear the beef tenderloin over direct heat on the grill. Once the exterior has browned nicely (about five minutes or so) move the tenderloin to indirect heat. Cover with foil and cook for a half hour or so. Turn it occasionally.

How To Know When It's Done

So the grill is smoking away and the meat smells wonderful. But how do you know when the beef tenderloin is ready?

The best way is to insert a meat thermometer to test the internal temperature of the beef tenderloin. When it reads 125F (the perfect medium rare) remove it from the grill and allow it to rest on a cutting board for 15 minutes. This would be a great time to pat on some flavored butter for extra deliciousness.

The grilling time will depend on the size and thickness of the beef tenderloin. A rare beef tenderloin will take anywhere from 15 to 20 minutes on the grill. Medium rare will take around 30 minutes. Add 10 more minutes for medium well.

Don't forget to slice the grilled beef tenderloin against the grain!

Chef's tip: To kick things up a notch try grilling beef tenderloin on a bed of fresh herbs like rosemary or thyme.
