Buzz Kill: Smart Beer Packaging is Also Mosquito Repellent

Nothing ruins a couple of beers around the campfire like a swarm of bloodthirsty mosquitoes. Luckily, a Papua New Guinea brewery has come up with a novel way of repelling the buzzing beasts with a new type of smart packaging. Stop scratching and read on.

SP Lager has developed smart packaging that’s treated with eucalyptus and gives off the natural insect repellent when burnt. The “mozzie box,” as it’s known, comes in very handy in Papua New Guinea, where malaria is a persistent problem.

Award–Winning

The brand is one of the most popular beers in the country and they developed the smart packaging with the help of Australia/New Zealand agency GPY&R. It was deemed good enough a product to win a 'Promo & Activation' award at Cannes.

Zika virus

Of course, this beverage packaging isn’t particularly environmentally friendly, removing the option of recycling, as it does. But with growing concern over the Zika virus and the ongoing global issue of malaria, it’s an interesting idea nonetheless.
