The Canton 8 restaurant in Shanghai was today announced as the cheapest two Michelin–starred restaurant in the world.
Owned and operated by chef Jie Ming Jian, the restaurant is famed for it’s well priced flair of local fresh ingredients such Jian’s famous crystal prawn dumplings and lobster porridge.
Michelin say that lunch at Canton 8 can be obtained for as little as 48 yuan (US$7) and this makes it the cheapest offering in their two–starred tier of restaurants around the world.
Speaking at the ceremony for the Michelin Guide for Shanghai 2017, Jian said he “never dreamed” of winning such an accolade.
Today's announcement adds to a growing trend for Michelin to look further afield for restaurants: in their 2017 guide for Singapore the company awarded the first ever Michelin star to a street food stall.
The restaurant doesn’t have a website and, apart from today’s news, there’s little available in English about the dining experience but we have found a great collection of pictures shared on two Chinese sites, Dianping (Chinese Trip Advisor) and Weibo (Chinese Twitter).
