World’s Cheapest Michelin Star Restaurant to Open in New York

Tim Ho Wan, the Hong Kong-based dim sum restaurant widely regarded as the cheapest Michelin star restaurant in the world, is coming to New York.

The restaurant will soft launch on Friday 16 December, 2016 from 11am at a site in Manhattan’s East Village, before a full opening in January. Hungry New Yorkers can expect the chain’s signature steamed buns and dumplings for as little as $5 a dish, so would be advised to start queuing early. Find out what to expect in the video from Strictly Dumpling below.

Founded by chef Mak Kwai-Pui, the orignial Tim Ho Wan in Mongkok, Hong Kong gained its first star in 2010. The brand has since expanded across Southeast Asia and Australia. New York is Kwai-Pui’s first foray into the US market, after initial plans to open a restaurant in Hawaii were scrapped.

In the most recent Michelin Guide to Hong Kong and Macau, Tim Ho Wan North Point and Sham Shui Po both retained their one star status.

New Yorkers are a lucky bunch: the world’s first Michelin-starred street food stall, Singapore’s Hong Kong Soya Sauce Chicken Rice and Noodle recently popped-up in the city alongside Meadowood’s Christopher Kostow, for a tantalising mash-up of Singapore street food and three Michelin star fine dining.
