Food and Film Unite at the Culinary Cinema, Berlin 2017

Film buffs with a love of good food are in for a treat at this year's eleventh edition of the popular "culinary cinema." Set inside the Berlinale film festival foodies can head to the hip German capital of Berlin, from 12 to 17 February for their annual fix of Michelin chef dinners and top food films.

The motto of this year's sensation of the senses is "passion food" where eleven recent full-length films focusing on the relationship between food, culture and politics will be presented during the four foodie days. “Undoubtedly, passion – and its mastery – is a driving force behind the work of cooks and filmmakers, and simultaneously one of its themes,” Festival Director Dieter Kosslick explains.

Chef Line-up

This year's line up of chefs will take it in turns serving a menu inspired by the films which will be served following screenings in the Gropius Mirror Restaurant.

Eneko Atxathe youngest chef in Spain to earn 3 Michelin stars will open the event following a screening of Soul by José Antonio Blanco and Ángel Parra. The Spanish documentary follows Atxa's exploration of the soul of cooking, from his Basque country restaurant to Catalonia and Japan. 

Tim Raue, from two Michelin star, “Tim Raue”, Berlin, will take to the pass at the Culinary Cinema for a seventh time following a viewing of Chef’s Table (dir: Abigail Fuller) in which Tim Raue recounts the positive impact cooking had on his life.

Other chefs include Sebastian Frank from two Michelin star Hovath in Berlin following a screening of André – The Voice of Wine.  Christian Lohse of two Michelin starred "Fischers Fritz" in Berlin following Monsieur Mayonnaise. And, Alexander Koppe of one Michelin star "Skykitchen" Berlin following Schumann's Bar Talks in a documentary that follows Charles Schumann to some of the world's best bars.

To close, the Canadian production of Theater of Life will be screenedfollowing chef Massimo Bottura as he sets up a soup kitchen in Milan.

Berlinale Street Food

In addition to the film screenings, the program also includes presentations, discussions, and the Markthalle Neun and Slow Food where delicious Berlinale Street Food be on sale at outside food trucks.
