Anthony Bourdain is Writing a Comic About Chefs

Author, chef and Emmy-winning broadcasterAnthony Bourdain has somehow found time in his busy schedule eating his way around the world, and denouncing food trends, to pen a graphic novel about chefs.

The four-issue comic written with Joel Rose, called Hungry Ghosts, will be released in early 2018 on the Berger Books imprint of Dark Horse Comics. The series is inspired by a game dating back to the Endo period in Japan (1603-1868) called 100 Candles, in which samurai would try to freak each other out by sharing ghost stories, except in Hungry Ghosts, the tellers are chefs from around the world and the stories are centred on food, Vulture reports

"Hungry Ghosts reimagines this classic game of dread and terror as a circle of international chefs invoke modern tales of horror, terrifying yokai, yorei, and obake, all with the common thread of food," say Dark Horse.

This isn’t Bourdain’s first foray into comics: in 2012 he released Get Jiro! with Rose and illustrator Langdon Foss, a graphic novel about a customer-slaying sushi chef in Los Angeles (their crime? Ordering California rolls), which also featured a loosely based on a certain pioneer of California cuisine, that tortured a chef for serving a tomato out of season. A prequel was released in 2015.
