The S.Pellegrino Young chef 2018 semi-finalistshave been announced and the preliminary phase of challenges, or Local Competitions, in the third ever edition of S.Pellegrino Young Chef 2018 are underway ...
So far, two regions have experienced the thrill of the live culinary challenge where ten semi-finalists, per region, selected by Italian culinary school Alma, have had the chance to cook and serve their signature dishes to a jury of acclaimed chefs for their opinion and scoring.
The Local Competitions 2017 so far:
Germany and Austria
Germany and Austria kicked off the start of the Local Competitions in Frankfurt, Germany on Monday 26 June.
Falko Weiß was crowned winner of the region with his signature dish of stewed pork belly, crawfish and tea time fond entitled "City/Land/River" and inspired by his homeland.
The young chef from restaurant "à la Minute" restaurant in Trier, Germany will henceforth have the benefit of advice and mentorship from Karlheinz Hauser, helping him to develop right up until the Grand Finale.
Mediterranean Countries
With her partridge led signature dish “Ellinon Gefsis”, Constadina Voulgari finished ahead of nine other contenders on 10th July at Poli House Hotel in Tel Aviv.
"Made ... with her heart, and you could taste the difference" noted mentor and chef judge Nikos Roussos of the young chef from Crete, who had the edge over the other semi-finalists from Greece, Turkey and Israel.
The Challenge Ahead:
The rest of the Local Competitions are yet to come, with the competition intensity ramping up from September onwards. Expectant semi-finalists around the world are still waiting anxiously for the chance to compete in their respective regions around the world, with the hope of being selected for what could be a life changing moment.
Those talented young chefs fortunate enough to win against their peers will have the even greater advantage of extra time to work closely with their nominated professional mentor chef up until the Grand Finale in Milan in June 2018.
