Forget Spaghetti Western, Tampopo is a Ramen Western

Japanese director Juzo Itami’s Tampopo movie, originally released in 1985, tells the story of a widowed restaurant owner in search of a spark, namely how to make the most heavenly ramen to revive her ailing fortunes. On her quest she meets two milk-truck drivers who take it upon themselves to help Tampopo reach ramen perfection. The movie is viewed by many as a classic (and about how many food movies can you say that?), with a nod to classic Westerns, hence, a “Ramen Western.”

Why are we telling you this? Well, the Tampopo movie has been remastered in 4K resolution by Janus Films and following showings from 21 October in New York (with an appearance by actress Nobuko Miyamoto, plus Momofuku ramen-flavoured popcorn) and Los Angeles, will be screened in movie theatres across the US. There’s also a themed pop-up running at Diner in Brooklyn, tonight, 19 October, serving ramen to 4am, or until it runs out.
