The San Francisco Bay Area now has six three-star restaurants, as many as New York, following the release of the Michelin Guide to San Francisco 2017.
Quince, in the city's Jackson Square, joins Benu, The French Laundry, Manresa (where S.Pellegrino Young Chef 2016 winner Mitch Lienhard is Chef de Cuisine), Meadowood and Saison on three stars in the Guide to the Greater Bay Area and Wine Country.
In comparison, Washington, D.C. recently the subject of its first ever Michelin Guide, has no three star restaurants. The first Michelin Guide to San Francisco was released in 2006.
Along with six three-star restaurants, there are now seven two-star restaurants with the ascension of Lazy Bear and 41 one-star restaurants (a list dominated by sushi restaurants and including seven newbies) in this part of the world – 54 in total. Many had expected Dominique Crenn of two star Atelier Crenn to be the first female chef in America to gain the highest honour, but that third star remains elusive.
Michelin also awarded 75 Bib Gourmand recommendations to restaurants offering exceptional food at good prices.
