Prison Restaurant Named Best in London

The Clink, the fine dining restaurant staffed by inmates inside a South London prison, has been voted the best in London by TripAdvisor users.

The restaurant at HMP Brixton, which opened in 2009, beat 18,000 restaurants to the number one spot. It has a five star rating, with 97% of reviews either 'excellent' or 'very good,' the I reports. The menu is modern British with Meditteranean influences and costs around £30 for three courses.

Up to 30 prisoners at any one time work 40 hours a week in the restaurant whilst studying for nationally recognised food qualifications. The aim of the project, run by The Clink charity, is to provide inmates with real life practical skills in an effort to reduce reoffending – the charity also offers employment support on release. A recent study by the UK Ministry of Justice found that those trained in the restaurant were 40% less likely to reoffend.

The charity also has restaurants in three other British prisons, all of which have been rated number one in their area. Similar projects have sprung up outside of the UK too, including this fine dining restaurant in a prison in Milan
