Charged, a new documentary that recently opened the Santa Barbara Film International Film Festival, charts the rehabilitation of chef Eduardo Garcia after a near fatal accident left him severely disabled and wondering if he’d ever cook again.
Garcia was out on a hike in the Montana wilderness when he came into contact with a dead bear that was live with 2400 volts of electricity. He subsequently spent 48 days in hospital, during which time he was also diagnosed with stage two testicular cancer.
At the time of his accident he was successful yacht chef. Now an athlete and speaker for the Challenged Athletes Foundation, he’s learning to use his prosthetic hook in the kitchen and rebuilding his confidence. As he told Munchies, "For a while, simple jobs were suddenly mountains to climb and overcome. But we humans adapt. Soon I was frying steaks and whipping up salsas again."
Watch the trailer for the movie, which was funded via a Kickstarter campaign, below. Warning: this does contain some graphic footage of injuries. No word on a wider release yet, but it surely can’t be long before this inspiring story reaches a wider audience.
