Restaurant Chain Rolls Out Virtual Reality Dining

An Italian restaurant chain will be rolling out virtual reality dining in its restaurants throughout November, the first to do so in the UK.

As The Caterer reports, Carluccio’s, the UK Italian chain founded by Antonio Carluccio will be introducing 50,000 virtual reality dining headsets that will transport diners to Taormina, Sicily for an al fresco dining experience. Diners simply need to download a video from YouTube to their phones and then connect their phones to the headsets for a full 360-degree experience.

The headsets are being installed to promote the chain’s new menu, and while a canny marketing tool, it will be interesting to see whether the idea of virtual reality dining has any legs on the high street.

Taking the concept of virtual reality dining several steps further is Project Nourished, led by a US-based team. Their ‘Pepa’ starter kit includes both a headset and a smell module, and, in the future they hope, a ‘bone conduction transducer’ to mimic the sound of eating.

We don’t think the high street is quite ready for that yet.
