Food photographer Signe Birck has, for as long as she can remember, been obsessed with the colours black and white. So, for the recent FoodPhoto Festival in Vejle, Denmark, she asked five chef friends to create two dishes each: one entirely in black and one in white.
“I wanted to ... bring to life a project that I had been contemplating for a long time,” says Birck, “a series of black/white colour photographs ... The only direction [the chefs] were given was to create one all-black dish, and one all-white dish. They would then be photographed on black/white plate ware and ditto backgrounds.”
They weren’t just any chefs however, with Bryce Shuman of Primrose, formerly of Betony, and Matt Lambert of New York’s one Michelin star The Musket Room involved in the project.
Can a monochrome dish look appetising, as well as elegant? Well, for the most part, we think the chefs pull it off here. Read more about the project.
