Celebrating its 10th anniversary this year, theSony World Photography Awards organised by the World Photography Organization, is one of the world's leading photography competitions: in 2017, the contest received more than 227,000 images of photographers from 183 countries.
Scott Gray, CEO of the World Photography Organisation, has commented: “I am especially proud of this year’s selection of Photographer of the Year. I feel that in many cases it is easy to shock but that it can be so tremendously difficult to capture a sophisticated elegance, that really is so beautiful it shows the medium of photography at its best.”
This is a list of 2017 winners for each category of the contest - Open, Professional, Youth and Student Focus:
- Professional Photographer of the Year - Frederik Buyckx, Belgium
- Open Photographer of the Year - Alexander Vinogradov, Russian Federation
- Youth Photographer of the Year – Katelyn Wang, US
- Student Photographer of the Year – Michelle Daiana Gentile, Argentina
The winning images from this year's contest have been exposed at Somerset House (London) from April 21 to May 7, 2017.
