10 Kitchen Hacks That Make Life Easier

Whether it's finding the quickest way to chop herbs, streamlining the smoothie-making process or making the perfect boiled egg, we could all use a few tips and tricks to make life a little easier in the kitchen.

With that in mind we've gathered 10 life hacks that are all food related. You'll find nifty ideas for making salad greens last longer, keeping brown sugar from hardening and much more. Take a look:

1. CHOP HERBS WITH A PIZZA CUTTER

Who says pizza cutters are only for cutting pizza? They are also great for chopping herbs quickly and effectively. Use it for cilantro, parsley, basil...you name it.

2. Keep Salad Greens Crisp With Paper Towels

This is a great life hack for anyone who takes lunch to work.

When you pack your salad the night before cover it with a paper towel before placing a lid over the container. The paper towel will absorb the humidity keeping the salad crisp until lunch time. Don't forget to refrigerate it once you get to work!

3. Store Potatoes With Apples 

Do your potatoes spoil too fast?  Let apples come to the rescue.

This fall fruit produces ethylene gas which prevents the potatoes from sprouting. Apples and potatoes may be stored in the same container for a maximum of eight weeks.

4. Boil the Perfect Egg

Oh, eggs. Some like them hard boiled, others like them runny. You'll get it right each time when you consult this picture.

5. Keep Avocados From Browning

If you are a fan of guacamole then you may already know this kitchen trick: squeeze fresh lemon or lime juice on avocados to preven them from browning. If you plan on refrigerating the avocado for later use then cover with plastic wrap to further prevent oxidation.

6. Finally...the Perfect Toast!

Want perfect toast? It's as easy as putting two slices of bread in one of the toaster's slots. You'll end up with a golden exterior and a soft warm inside (consult the picture above).

7. The Easiest Way To Deseed a Pumpkin

This trick is so simple you'll wonder why you haven't done it before: use a melon baller to remove the seeds from pumpkins and other winter squashes.

8. Freeze Smoothie Ingredients

Don't have time to whip up a smoothie in the morning? You will when you follow this trick this simple trick from TheKitchn.com: freeze all the ingredients together in separate plastic storage bags. Just dump in the blender, puree and go.

9. Keep Brown Sugar Soft

If you use brown sugar then you'll know it hardens quickly. So what's the trick to keeping it soft? Store it with a slice of bread. Yup, bread.

10. Hate Peeling Squash? Bake The Whole Thing

Pumpkin lovers out know that peeling pumpkin, or any winter squash for that matter, is a hellish task.

Make things easier by baking the whole pumpkin without peeling. All you have to do is follow this hack from Biteofdelight.netscore the bottom of the squash with a deep cut for ventilation (to prevent it from exploding) and place in the oven. You'll want to place a sheet pan or foil on a lower rack to catch any drippings.

Bake the pumpkin at 350 degrees (150C) for about five hours, depending on the size. When you can easily insert a knife into the skin remove it from the oven and cut in half. Scoop out the pumpkin and you'll have an instant puree.

We know this method takes forever but gives you time to focus on other things while your beautiful pumpkin cooks.
